Colledge Redfern: Who We Are

Colledge Redfern is founded on the combined experience of David Colledge and Alan Redfern, whose backgrounds span senior audit roles, complex group reporting, commercial management and specialist advisory work. Their expertise includes tax planning and compliance, alongside acting as senior statutory auditors for a substantial multi entity UK charity group and advising owner managed businesses, professional practices and property based enterprises. This breadth of experience underpins the firm’s reputation for clear, practical and technically robust advice.

David Colledge – MA FCCA

David Colledge is a Chartered Certified Accountant and registered statutory auditor with more than 30 years’ experience across practice and industry. His career spans senior finance roles, complex group reporting, commercial leadership and hands on advisory work with owner managed businesses, professionals and rural enterprises.

David began his career in a professional accountancy practice in Watford before moving into industry, first with an independent airline and later as Group Financial Controller of a listed public company. Awarded a Jubilee Scholarship by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, he completed an MA in Accounting and Finance and subsequently joined the international division of a major UK corporation as Consolidations Manager.

A desire to return to client‑facing work led David to establish his own accountancy practice. He later partnered with Alan Redfern to form Colledge Redfern, a firm recognised for technical rigour, practical commercial insight and clear, actionable advice. David advises a wide range of clients on business structures, tax planning and commercial strategy, with particular expertise in property-based businesses including commercial and residential lettings, estate agents and national mortgage advisers.

David also brings meaningful insight into agricultural and rural business through his involvement in his family’s 200-hectare livestock farm and holiday-let business. While his core expertise remains firmly in accountancy and professional advisory work, this practical exposure gives him a clear understanding of the operational realities, diversification pressures and compliance challenges faced by farming and rural clients.

Beyond accountancy, David has founded and grown commercial ventures, including a specialist IT company serving practising accountants - later acquired by Sage - and a long-established London stationery business serving architects, designers and art galleries. This blend of IT, retail and professional services experience gives him a deep appreciation of systems, controls and the commercial pressures his clients navigate.

David and his wife remain actively involved in rural business and community life, balancing professional practice with the day-to-day realities of running a working farm and holiday accommodation.

Alan Redfern – FCA FCCA

Alan has now retired from the practice but continues his association with the firm as a consultant and adviser.

A chartered accountant for many years, Alan spent the first decade of his career as a senior auditor with one of the former Big Six accounting firms, before moving into industry as Company Secretary and Financial Controller for an international group of management consultants. His audit work during this period also involved extensive overseas travel across Europe and the Middle East, giving him broad experience of international reporting, governance and regulatory environments.

Throughout his career, Alan has applied his technical expertise not only to large corporate clients but also to a number of charities and faith-based organisations, which have long been among his specialist areas. Together with David Colledge, he served as senior statutory auditor for a substantial group of connected UK charities whose combined income places them within the upper tier of UK charitable organisations. This engagement required oversight of complex multi-entity reporting, governance structures and charity-sector compliance.

Outside his professional work, Alan is an accomplished musician who has sung in choirs and played viola in orchestras. He also serves as Hon. Treasurer for several voluntary groups. Alan’s wife is a senior healthcare professional, and they have two adult children pursuing careers as a chartered surveyor and a physiotherapist.
